10 Running Facts To Inspire You

Inspiration is “the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something”. Here are 10 awesome running facts to inspire you to run more!

#1. The oldest and biggest Ultra Marathon in the world is the Comrades Marathon held in South Africa.

The race began in 1921, it covers roughly 90km and is capped at 20,000 participants.

#2. Oprah Winfrey ran a marathon. Oprah ran the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C. in 1994 in 4:29:15.

Not only did Oprah Winfrey run a marathon but she did it in a very good time too! Yay Oprah!

#3. The Self-Transcendence 3100 mile race is the world’s longest certified footrace. This multi-day race is held in New York from June to August. Runners must do 5649 laps of one extended city block. Runners have 52 days in which to complete the distance which is an average of 59.62 miles (95.95 km) every day.

I couldn’t imagine running that many laps, I’d go crazy.

#4. Of all the cities in the world that log runs on the Strava app, a whopping 30% of Sydney’s runners run in the morning, more than any other city. Paris loves to run at lunch time while Barcelona gets it done at night time.

#5. On Strava, there are athletes who have logged their runs as commutes to work. Tuesday is the most popular commute day with the average commute being about 7.6 km.

#6. Kathrine Switzer wasn’t the first woman to run the Boston Marathon but she was the first to run as a numbered entry in 1967.

Katherine was made famous by an incident that took place in front of press photographers where an official attacked her and tried to expel her from the race. The press caught everything on camera. Time-Life listed one of the photographs as among its “100 Photographs that Changed the World.”

#7. On female marathoners, the numbers are growing. According to Women’s Running, female marathon participant numbers across the world has grown by 27% (men only 8%).

#9. Running with music: In a recent poll of 89 running mums, 80% said they don’t run with music, while 20% said they do run with music. Interestingly, 19% started running with music and later gave it up.

#10. By 24 December 2015, there were over 2 million registered Parkrunners, globally.
